The New Forests of Borneo and Sumatra
Make way Jungle, we want Palm Oil!

Letter writing campaign:
> Asking UK supermarkets to stop our part in forest destruction.
> Our letter writers have been working very hard on behalf of the orangutans and South East Asian Forest. I am very pleased to confirm that all 5 of our target supermarkets: TESCO, ASDA, Morrisons, Sainsbury and Waitrose have developed positions on sustainable palm oil - all are now members of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil!

This nursery will expand to replace all the trees you see in the background.
In total, this one concession will destroy 40,000 hectares of orangutan rich forest.
A new survey shows that between 1,600 and 2,000 orangutans live here.

At this stage we feel our campaign work will be most effective on Indonesian soil. Getting the supermarkets over here in the UK was a huge achievement that was the result of a number of organisations joint efforts and a considerable amount of effort from the public. The UK sign-up to the RSPO has been noticed in the palm oil industry. It is a a great boost to companies wanting to pursue non-destructive agricultural practices. What we need to do now is to raise the level of awareness of what is happening within industry in the countries where the plantations are found and the concessions are being given.

Cockroach Productions' Orangutan Film Protection Project has just completed two Indonesian language educational videos that will tour both Kalimantan and Sumatra as part of the UNEP/UNESCO/FFC GAFI roadshows. Furthermore we want to hand over our documentary evidence, along with that of our colleagues in the field and provide editing training to local organisations that can innitiate their own campaigns. We are certain that the only way Indonesia will address the palm oil crisis in a timely fashion is if there is a considerable amount of pressure brought on the government from the Indonesian public.

So for the time being we are asking supporters of the campaign to assist us by supporting this handover initiative - giving local people the tools and skills to fight their own battle against poorly planned land conversion. For ways to help: see below:

Donate Old or Unused Equipment

Have you got any old laptops, digital camerasor GPS devices that you haven't used in a while? Would you like to see them put to good use? We can help you find good homes for this sort of equipment. As Cockroach Productions expands its reach into environmental and social documentary we will help support the local communities we work with. One way of doing this is to provide local people with the tools that will allow them to communicate the issues they are facing on the ground. Digital cameras and camcorders provide a wonderful and immediate means of documenting what is happening in at local levels and reporting it to the wider world. If you provide the kit we will make sure it finds a good new home and that the people using it will be trained in operating it. Please drop us a line if you think you have something that might be useful.

Sponsor the Orangutan Film Protection Project

Here at the Orangutan Film Protection Project we are striving to use film to improve the future of the orangutan. Through news releases and television and radio broadcasts we have already reached an audience of 86,000,000 people. We have used this media coverage to highlight international issues relating to palm oil, and have assisted organisations within the Ape Alliance to bring about positive change. Right now we are working on developing a training video to stop orangutan and human conflict happening in the field. All to often a lack of education has led to very unfortunate encounters whereby orangutans have been injured. We are looking for support to fund an outreach program that will take our film into the field and fund workshops that will address these issues within palm oil plantations - making these encounters a thing of the past. We are a small and dedicated organisation, so we appreciate any support we get.

Support our friends in the field

Our work in the field would not be possible without the continuing support from two incredible organisations. We would encourage you to consider supporting the work of both the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation and the Sumatran Tiger Conservation Program, without whose work the future for Borneo and Sumatra's forests would be much more uncertain.
